Super Metroid’s Hidden Tutorials

While many game designers seem content to bombard players with tutorial boxes and guides every 10th step, the best games include tutorials that are built into the gameplay so they are nearly perfectly transparent. Just check out how the designers of Super Metroid managed to teach players how to play the game while still maintaining Samus’ sense of isolation.

Super Metroid’s Opening Is A Masterpiece

In my opinion, Super Metroid stands at the top of the mountain as a shinning example of a perfect game.

Of course, that’s far from a controversial statement. Many consider it to be the 2d platformer that designers still aspire to top.

In particular, the game’s intro “stage” aboard the space station serves as both an introduction to the game for new players and a refresher for those who’ve played the previous games.
